The Urgent Need for Equitable Mental Health Support in Bexar County’s Charter Schools

At Structure Innovations and SI Education, we deeply understand that the well-being of our communities is rooted in the mental and emotional health of our youth. Mental health is not just a personal issue—it’s a community issue that impacts our schools, families, and future generations. This belief is personal for us, as many of us have faced our own struggles with mental health and know firsthand the profound difference that proper support can make.

However, there’s a growing concern in Bexar County that needs immediate attention: the significant gap in mental health funding for students in public charter schools. This is not just a matter of policy; it’s a matter of fairness, equity, and the well-being of thousands of students who are being left behind.

The Funding Disparity

In Bexar County, over 25,000 students attend public charter schools. These schools serve a diverse population, including many students who face significant challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the critical need for mental health support in these schools, the current funding allocations are far from equitable.

While $20 million has been allocated to Independent School Districts (ISDs) for mental health programming, public charter schools have been allocated $0. This funding gap affects 17% of Bexar County’s student population, leaving them without access to the mental health resources available to their peers in ISDs. This exclusion is not just a statistic; it represents thousands of students being denied the support they need to thrive.

Why This Matters

Mental health is foundational to every aspect of a student’s life. It affects their ability to learn, form relationships, and navigate the challenges of adolescence. When students don’t have access to mental health resources, they are more likely to struggle academically, socially, and emotionally. This impacts not only their futures but also the future of our community as a whole.

For students in public charter schools, the lack of mental health support can have devastating consequences. These students often come from under-resourced communities where the school might be their primary source of mental health support. Without adequate funding, these schools are unable to provide the necessary services to help students cope with stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.

We Need Your Help!

That’s why my family has joined with Futuro San Antonio to bring awareness to this critical situation and ensure that every voice in our community is heard before this pivotal vote. We must advocate for equitable mental health funding for all students, regardless of the type of school they attend. Every student in Bexar County deserves access to the resources they need to succeed—both academically and personally.
